This paper offers an introduction to satellite orbit and attitude theory, suitable for use with a geostationary synchronous satellite. The basic Keplerian orbit is derived, first order approximations to luni-solar and geopotential perturbations are developed and methods of orbit computation described. Also discussed are longitude drift, the technique of orbit manoeuvres, and attitude determination and control. Throughout the paper the principles are illustrated by reference to the Skynet satellites and a summary of computer programs in the Skynet 2 suite is given. Author
