The research project reported here was undertaken in an effort to determine whether excited rare gas halides, specifically, KrF and ArF, could be produced by ion-molecule reactions between the rare gas atomic ions and fluorine- containing gases such as F2 NF3, and SF6. No excited rare gas halide emissions were observed for any of the systems studied. Emissions resulting from the ion-molecule reactions investigated were all atomic and could be assigned to He, F, F, Ar, Ar, Kr, Kr, N or N transitions. Author
