The interaction of TNT with the surface of activated carbon FS300 has been studied via adsorption isotherms of TNT and water, surface area determinations and electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis ESCA. The rate and extent of adsorption of TNT is strongly dependent on the particle size of FS300 and hence on the diffusion rate, and independent of pH and temperature. The process of deactivation of the carbon surface is shown to involve progressive irreversible occlusion of the microporous structure with each successive adsorptiondesorption with acetone cycle. The irreversibility of TNT adsorption is attributed to chemical interaction and a mechanism for the deactivation of the carbon surface is postulated.
