Abstract:

The only other study which addressed the estimation of stature from the vertebral column had been conducted by an American, Thomas Dwight, in 1894, prior to Pearsons comments. Dwights study utilized intact vertebral columns from cadavers and, although providing an indication of the usefulness of the column for stature estimation, is of little value when dealing with skeletal remains. The purpose of this research is to at least partially fill this void by developing regression formulae for the estimation of stature from the vertebrae of American Negroes. Negroes were chosen for study because of the total lack of previous vertebral studies on this race, and because of the availability of Negro specimens from the Terry Anatomical Collection now located in Washington, D.C.
