Abstract:
These notes provide an introduction to the class of single-instruction, multiple-data stream computers with the simplest processing elements. Design principles are explained in terms of hypothetical Distributed Processor Arrays, with examples drawn from experimental systems. Emphasis is placed on a minimising the cost differential when the DPA is compared with conventional main storage, and b designing the array control unit to support advanced forms of protection and language implementation. The influence of the DPA on general system design is examined briefly. Author
