Effect of Nonuniform Yarn Lengths on the Strength of Pressurized Fabric Tubes

An analysis of the load-deformation behavior and strength of pressurized fabric tubes having unequal yarn lengths is presented. This analysis models the loading of such a fabric by consideration of a series of axial members of unequal length and assumes a linear load-deformation behavior of the yarns. To obtain results the unequal lengths are chosen to be some mean length plus a randomly distributed variation about this mean. Using a normal distribution for the lengths, a computer simulation is used to compute the statistics of the failure load for fabrics having yarn lengths specified by the mean and standard deviation. These results show that significant strength reductions are possible as a result of weaving inaccuracies which result in yarns of unequal length.
