A program of field and laboratory research with college-military students is presented which was directed at examining the differential reaction of individuals to varying patterns of leadership behavior and social dynamics of groups. Focus is on the personality and situational factors that were felt to be related to attractiveness of a group and the willingness of group members to cooperate in the attainment of objectives Personality variables which are manipulated are locus-of-control, interpersonal trust, level of moral development and ego identity status. Situational variables are forms of influence by leaders, differential patterns of reward allocation and integrating conflict and cooperation. The results of five laboratory experiments and six field studies are reported and discussed in relation to prevailing theory.
