Synthesis and Polymerization of Fluorobicyclobutanes to Chemically Dimensionally, and Thermally Stable Polymers.

Di- and tetrafluorocyclobutene esters and nitriles were synthesized via pi square pi square cycloaddition reactions. In general, they did not homopolymerize but copolymerized readily with electron-rich vinyl monomers and with bicyclobutane monomers. The copolymers were fairly thermally stable. A variety of routes to fluorinated bicyclobutanes, cyclopropenes, and epoxides was explored without success. A novel cyclopropane synthesis was found in the cycloaddition of bromoketene acetal to acrylonitrile or methyl alpha-cyanoacrylate. Author
