An apparatus for the rapid, convenient, and safe wet ashing of most biological fluids and tissues in a microwave oven, used in combination with the acid scrubber and vapor exhaust system, is described. Exogenous contamination is minimal during the procedure and no special hood is required. The operator exposure to the hazards of noxious acid products of digestion is almost eliminated. The system described is suitable for microscale digestions by simply scaling down sample and reagent volumes. Most digestions are successfully completed in 10 to 20 min as compared to over 3 hr required for conventional ashing procedures. Author
