A conceptual and analytical study of the utility of speed in naval operations, specifically to include transit, maneuver, search, pursuit, escape and convoy operations the analysis to cover the full range of available speeds for current and future ships and aircraft types, including hydrofoil craft, surface effect ships, and SWATH ships. The rationale of the need for speed in the various naval functions studied was documented and a determination of those speed ranges wherein future platforms, existent or nonexistent, employing such speeds could increase the effectiveness of future naval operations was made.
