Abstract:

A study has been conducted to determine the feasibility of extending the information display capability in a modern fighter aircraft through the employment of diffraction optics techniques. Baseline concepts were designed using 1 reflective holographic optical elements on the aircraft canopy and 2 transmissive holographic optical elements on the operators flight helmet visor. Evaluation of these systems performance by computer was conducted. State-of-the-art surveys in holographic technology, image sources and materials technology are presented. The impact of future advances in the state of the art on the feasibility of these systems is discussed. Requirements for the extended display technology are formulated, using simulated encounter and mission analysis data. Author
