We have tested the potential of several sputtered cermets as a component in a solar-blind UV filter. Films made of metal grains embedded in an insulating matrix may exhibit a strong optical absorption which is absent in the bulk metal. The dimensions of the grains are much smaller than the wavelengths of the radiation which is relevant to the filter problem. Under this condition, the optical properties of the cermet may be described by the Maxwell-Garnett theory.
