An investigation of the nature of the degradation products from both steps of a chemical-bacteriological decomposition of nitrocellulose was carried out. A sensitive analytical method fro nitrocellulose was perfected. A materials balance of both process steps was obtained. The chemical hydrolysis was found to give inorganic nitrites, nitrates and carbonates, and also nitrated organic oxyacids. Subsequent action by bacteria changes the product mix, but the nature of the products is essentially the same.
