The purposes of this meeting, cosponsored by the Office of the Secretary of Defense and the Office of Naval Research, were 1 to review what is known about attrition in the Services-its magnitude, current trends and costs, and how it is managed 2 to learn about relevant research-both inside and out of the DOD-that deals with attrition and 3 to identify gaps in our knowledge that could be addressed by new R and D.
