Creep of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastics

Creep tests have been performed on unidirectional 0 deg, cross-plied 0 90 deg, angle-plied or - 45 deg and multi-plied 0 or - 45 deg and 90 or - 45 deg carbon fibre reinforced plastics. The test temperatures were 21 deg C and 80 deg C except for or - 45 deg orientations where the upper temperature was 50 deg C. Small creep strains were observed in 0 deg, 0 90 deg and 0 or - 45 deg materials after 1000 hours at stresses of 40 and 80 of the tensile strength. The creep resistance of 90 or - 45 deg composite was lower than material containing 0 deg fibres but higher than simple or - 45 deg constructions.
