Abstract:

The background theory used in understanding longitudinal and shear velocities in isotropic and anisotropic materials is summarized. The relation of these velocities to mechanical property evaluation is presented. The derived expressions are applied. An ultrasonics apparatus was used to measure longitudinal and shear velocities in a variety of commercially available semicrystalline polymers. Measured results agree well with other published values. The use of this ultrasonic technique for polymer characterization is discussed.
