Abstract:

Current portable instruments utilizing a bistatic technique for measuring cloudbase heights are subject to large errors when the ceiling is greater than five times the instrument baseline. A hand-held, portable, low- cost, battery-operated laser range finder was evaluated for use as a cloud-base height instrument. The performance of the device was compared with the results obtained from several instruments designed as ceilometers, an ANGMQ-13A rotating beam ceilometer, an Impulsphysik ceiloskop, and an ASEA ceilometer. For ceilings between 180 and 400 meters, data from all instruments showed the same long-term trends and similar short-term variators. For ceilings above 400 meters, the ceiloskop showed large errors compared to the other ceilometers while the readings obtained from ANGMQ-13A, the ceilometer, and the ANGVS-5 compared favorably.
