After major systems such as tanks are developed and fielded, improvements are made to the end item. These improvements are the results of advances in technology which have subsequently become available, a change in the threat, safety requirements, improvements in reliability, efforts to reduce costs, and efforts to standardize components of systems. To control these changes the Department of the Army has a formal materiel acquisition process which the developer is required to use. The report considers the process for getting a Product Improvement Proposal PIP approved and funded. It further outlines the alternatives available for fielding the PI. Specific examples are used relative to the M60 tank program with some lessons learned in fielding the M60A2.
