This study examines configuration management as defined in Department of Defense publications for major defense systems and applies configuration management to the development of computer systems. DOD Directives, DOD Instructions, Military Standards, and Air Force publications provide the primary source of configuration management principles and functions. Configuration management has had limited application to embedded computer systems and even less to general purpose computer systems. The study discusses configuration management principles in the computer system environment and concludes that these principles can be and should be applied to the development of computer systems. To demonstrate that conclusion, the principles are applied to a specific Air Force program, the Base Level Data Automation Program Phase 4. Author
