Microstructural Investigation of Polycrystalline Iron Whiskers.

The microstructure of polycrystalline iron whiskers produced by chemical vapor decomposition in a magnetic field is found to consist of a core extending the length of the whiskers surrounded by a series of approximately cylindrical layers made up of particles whose diameters are about 1000 angstroms to 3000 angstroms. The grain size in both the core and the surrounding particles is found to be between 50 angstroms to 200 angstroms. The very high strength of these whiskers, 800 MPa, is considered a result of extreme grain refinement strengthening. Author
