Techniques have been developed enabling the measurement of the surface diffusive flux of one material on the surface of a chemically different material. These techniques involve the use of an Auger electron spectrometer system both to form an initial surface composition profile, and to measure the evolution of this profile with time. These technique have been applied to a study of the surface diffusion of carbon on a Pt111 surface.
