A Monte Carlo study has been made of hot electron energy distributions in thin insulating films. Whereas a constant energy-independent mean free path results in a stable energy distribution, it is shown that an energy-dependent mean free path which increases with increasing energy can lead to energetic runaway of the electrons. A graphical method has been developed to gain insight into this problem, and is illustrated by several prototypical examples.
