This report is a review of the literature concerned either directly or indirectly with the trouble shooting of electronic equipment. Specifically, this review presents the most pertinent findings in the areas of problem solving and concept formation and indicates the manner in which these findings have impinged upon, or could impinge upon, thinking about trouble shooting. The literature on trouble shooting is discussed and the final section outlines a research task designed to develop an efficient, generally applicable procedure for trouble shooting electronic equipment, and to develop methods for teaching the procedure.
