Abstract:

The main focus of Marine Corps Task Analysis TA is upon occupational fields OFs. Data for analysis in the TA process are gathered by the administration of a Task Analysis Inventory to a sample of Marines in the OF being studied. It has been the policy of the Office of Manpower Utilization, HQMC OMU, which conducts the TA program, to administer a task inventory to the largest possible sample in an OF. The specific objective of the research described in this report was to develop guidelines for decision-making by the OMU staff in the selection of OF sample sizes to which task inventories will be administered. Generally accepted essential requirements for the design of an optimum sample are discussed. Major implications of these requirements are spelled out as they apply to samples in Task Analysis. A summary of requirements for a sampling design for OMU is given. Research findings are reported that suggest a uniform optimum size for OMU samples, and a recommended sampling strategy is outlined for guidance in data collection. Author
