The report describes an initial technology development effort with the goal of producing chemical vapor deposited CVD Silicon Carbide SiC radial inflow turbine rotors suitable for gas turbine applications. The work concentrated on optimizing the deposition parameters for producing CVD SiC material so as to obtain material with reduced residual stress, reduced flaw density and size and with thicknesses adequate for the rotor application. Work was also performed to determine a rotor shape that would have low rotational and thermal stresses and could be produced with high quality CVD SiC material. The optimization effort was successful in reducing the as deposited residual stresses, flaw size and flaw density so that one half inch thick parts can now be routinely produced.
