Abstract:

ELI English Language Interpreter is a natural language parsing program currently used by several story understanding systems. ELI differs from most other parsers in that it produces meaning representations using Schanks Conceptual Dependency system rather than syntactic structures uses syntactic information only when the meaning can not be obtained directly talks to other programs that make high level inferences that tie individual events into coherent episodes uses context-based exceptions conceptual and syntactic to control its parsing routines. Examples of texts that ELI has understood, and details of how it works are given.
