This paper describes the electronic design of a slant-range optical proximity sensor using a pulse-modulated injection laser for the transmitter and a direct-detection receiver for the collection of target returns, much after the manner of a conventional pulse-radar. Of particular interest is the development of laser modulator circuitry to produce 50-A pulses up to 200 ns wide at repetition rates up to 2 kHz.
