In order to increase the chances of survival for an injured UDTSEAL swimmer during transport from the beach back to the pickup point an inflatable device was developed. This device was designed to protect the injured swimmer by providing immobilization of fractures, acting as a buoyant platform for water transport, and functioning as a semirigid stretcher during land transport. The Naval Medical Research Institute was charged with evaluating the environmental aspects and determining the overall immobilization efficiency of the device. As a result of these evaluations the safe zipped times as dictated by the ambient thermal conditions were established. The immobilization evaluations revealed both the strengths and weaknesses associated with the present harness configuration.
