This chapter gives an overview of current concepts in catalysis of predominantly simple reactions. Catalysts covered are metals, semiconducting oxides, and sulfides. The emphasis is on the connections between solid-state chemistryphysics, spectroscopy, and surface physics in ultrahigh vacuum on the one hand and catalysis on the other hand.
