Abstract:

A performance criterion or set of criteria is needed to provide a means for the objective quantitative appraisal of image content of the simulated visual environment as displayed to a trainee. A preliminary analysis of the problem examined two areas. First, it identified those characteristics of the electrooptical imaging system which most directly affect image quality and second, it identified the techniques of image manipulation derived from the general areas of pattern recognition and biomedical image processing. The Modulation Transfer Function Area MTFA has been proposed as a physical measure of image quality for comparing the relative quality of a number of imaging systems. Techniques found successful in raising the apparent quality of digital imagery could serve as trial bases for quality criteria. Two techniques directly attributable to pattern recognition, the correlation analysis, and the Haar transformation are proposed.
