Leadership as a field of investigation is reviewed with attention to its place as an influence process. Consideration is given to elements of social exchange in leadership, three types being identified the transactional, dealing most directly with leader-follower exchanges of reward in the aggregate system progress, involving the input-output effectiveness of the group or organization in the task environment seen, as locomotion toward a goal and individual enhancement, concerning the followers sense of equity, justice, and personal achievement, within the broader collective goal or goals.
