Fatigue crack closure behavior in 2024-T3 aluminum alloy was investigated using a laser interferometry method developed in this investigation and an Elber type displacement gage. The crack closure results using the two measurement methods are compared for constant amplitude loading. The displacement gage was also used to measure the crack closure behavior following selected overloadunderload sequences. These results are compared with an inverse technique. The measurement methods and equipment are described and the crack closure results are presented. Author
