The SENDS system is designed to provide the aircrewman with a continuous indication of inflight escape capability. The concept as conceived by Vought, monitors the aircraft dynamic correlation by means of onboard sensors, provides these data to an onboard computer which computes escape capability and displays the current status in terms of time remaining to initiate an ejection and still be within the safe recovery envelope of the escape system. Preliminary flight testing has indicated that the SENDS concept is feasible for incorporation into ejection seat equipped aircraft. Evaluation of the flight test data indicates that the SENDS system performed as designed throughout the conventional flight envelope including maneuvers such as taxi, takeoff, climbout, cruise, descent, approach and landing. Data are presented for a total of 34 aircraft maneuvers. Additional software refinements are recommended to optimize the system performance during spins. It is recommended that Phase IV B and C System Design and Refinement and Phase V System Flight test be conducted.
