Abstract:
The causes and consequences of plastic flow concentration were investigated in order to gain a better understanding of the major microstructural parameters affecting plastic flow concentration in precipitation hardened materials. Micromechanical models that contribute to the understanding of deformation and fracture of high strength precipitation hardened materials were developed. These models have enabled the important, microstructural parameters to be defined and quantitatively related to the propensity for plastic flow concentration. The results of this work will enable alloy developers to concentrate on the appropriate microstructural features to minimize flow concentration. Author
