The United States Army has established a requirement for the operation of helicopters under instrument flight conditions, and it has been proved that helicopter instrument flights are both practical and feasible. In order to exploit fully the helicopters capability under instrument conditions, it is necessary to alleviate one of the major deterrents to helicopter instrument flight, that of pilot fatigue. This fatigue is a direct result of the inherent instability of the helicopter. The pilot must devote most of his time and attention to flying the helicopter and is unable to divert sufficient attention to instrument flight procedures.
