Abstract:
The object of the study was to determine the feasibility of replacing the presently used single-chamber master cylinder with a dual-chamber master cylinder in brake fluid stroking tests. Dual-chamber master cylinders were obtained from two sources and were subjected to stroking tests. The SAE compatibility fluid was used in both the drum-and-shoe system and the SAE stroking fixture system. In all tests, malfunctions were attributed to the heat-sensitive quality of the SBR master cylinder rubber cups. Excessive pressure loss was noted when the test temperature was reached. Results of this study indicate clearly that the dual-chamber master cylinder should not be used in the standard brake fluid stroking test until brake cups which are less heat sensitive are developed.
