Abstract:

Electromagnetic scale modeling to complement full-scale EMP testing of large systems has been used successfully. The coupling of electromagnetic fields into external system receptors, as well as the effects of complex scattering, can be studied with relative ease as a function of source parameters e.g., polarization, azimuth, elevation, planarity, and uniformity and system configuration. This report contains the results of a scale-model study of the SAFEGUARD Perimeter Acquisition Radar PAR site in North Dakota. The objectives of this study were to determine the following a A possible means to reduce coupling of electromagnetic fields into the PAR Power Plant PARPP. b The effect of an earth-grounded EMP simulator on the response of buried conduits entering the PARPP. The information obtained under a should prove useful in the design of hardened buildings similar to those at the PAR site. The conclusions reached under b could impact techniques used in EMP testing of large systems with buried receptors. The model used to obtain data for this report was built to 1100 scale of the PAR site. Exterior dimensions of the PARPP and the radar building were scaled, as well as those of the heat sink. A reasonable effort was made to scale the conduit runs and yard piping entering the PARPP. Author
