A technique is developed which permits propellant gas temperature to be extracted from pressure measurements taken within the gun tube. Basically similar to acoustic thermometry, the wave speed of a signal propagating at the sonic velocity is determined. In this application, the speed of the expansion wave which propagates back up the gun tube following shot ejection is derived from pressure data taken at discrete axial locations within four calibers of the muzzle of a 20mm gun. The propellant gas temperature is calculated from the measured speed of this wave and the equation of state.
