Abstract:

Several studies have been performed to date analyzing the social and economic impacts on communities resulting from military base closures. This analysis takes a step towards filling the gap in the base closure studies by examining the heretofore unexplored impact on the natural and physical environment related to a base closure Clinton County AFB, Ohio. In this analysis the natural environment includes air and water quality, radiation and noise effects while the physical environment includes housing quality, facility use, transportation quality, public services quality, aesthetic quality, and land use. An attempt was made to measure the stated components of the natural and physical environment before and after the base closure to determine if differences existed that could be related to the base closure. Three components of the physical environment, land use, aesthetic quality, and facility use, were the only components determined to have undergone significant changes and they were attributable to the base closure. Changes in the natural environmental components, with respect to the base closure, were underterminable. Lack of existing data led to the recommendation that further research be performed to create reliable data from which the state of an environmental component can be inferred. Author
