The effects on slant range at target detection of various techniques of transmission bandwidth reduction was examined by building parametrically variable hardware and using test subjects on real time processed GFE film input. Frame rates down to 1 fps and foveal spots, both moveable and stationary, with areas from 15 to 55 of the total display area were tested. Both one- and two- dimensional SAED an analogdigital alogorithm compression techniques were tested. Effects of bit error rates of 0, 0.01 and 0.001 were tested. Ninety-four pilots and air traffic controllers were used as test subjects. Primary goal was a system configuration with acceptable degradation below 450 kbps. It was concluded that acceptable target detection could be achieved at a 250 kbps transmission rate including synchronization in the presence of 0.001 net error rate and probably down to 0.01 error rate.
