Abstract:

An accelerated program was conducted to evaluate design ideas and to predict performance of a vessel to contain the detonation of a heavily confined high explosive projectile. Several design ideas were examined using 12-scale open-ended cylinders. It was demonstrated, using available off-the-shelf components, that two concentric steel cylinders one about 10 smaller than the other lined on the inner surface with a fiberglass cylinder to slow fragments could contain a 4540-g equivalent case charge in the full scale. When the outer steel cylinder was wire wrapped with high tensile strength wire the full-scale capacity increased to a 7260 g equivalent cased charge. The effect of adding metal honeycomb or metal foam between the steel cylinders was also examined and found to reduce the maximum strain on the outer cylinder.
