The problem is determining the perception of NATO as a military alliance from an Eastern European viewpoint in the current year. Due to the nature of the essay, basic sources are personal observation as a Military Attache and the communications media coverage in a communist country. The image of NATO portrayed by the government to the public of a Communist country should be an indication of the major strengths of NATO and conversely its major weaknesses.
