An accelerating trend for military decision making in command and control situations is to provide the decision maker with statistically processed data. There are obvious benefits to be derived from training a decision maker to be a more efficient user of such diagnostic data. But there is little empirical evidence that training is effective in bringing about an enhancement of decision making performance. Two experiments are reported in which it was attempted to determine the effectiveness of a scenario approach for training individuals to make an abstract type of tactical decision based upon probabilistic data.
