The research has focused on an analysis of potential environmental factors that modify the ongoing level of ethanol ingestion induced in squirrel monkeys. Under conditions where fluid consumption is made excessive by intermittent food delivery, aversive environmental events did not substantially elevate alcohol intake. Factors other than aversive events would appear significant in the development of alcohol abuse.
