Instrumentation was developed to measure the vertical component of electric field near the ocean bottom. Theoretical work related this electric field measurement to the east-west volume transport, including effects of internal wave modes, steps in bottom topography and sub-bottom conductivity structure. Long term measurements revealed low frequency wave activity at the equator, which is tentatively interpreted as first mode Rossby waves. Author
