Data from nine subjects indicated reading speed increases with increases in digit length of numerals. Reading time was shown to be significantly longer when S expected to be asked to recall his reading than when he was assured he would not be asked. A new dependent variable, viz., Absorption Time was used to represent time required to extract meaning from numerical stimuli. The procedure and dependent variable were selected to a provide data required for a computer simulation of weapons system operator behavior and b attempt to approximate more closely in-flight reading processes of Navy aircrewmen.
