Production Engineering Measure for Low Noise Solid-State Oscillator.

The initial program objectives were to develop a low noise, Ku-band, GaAs IMPATT diode oscillator which could be used as an LO for a portable radar. Gallium arsenide IMPATT diodes were fabricated which met the basic requirements of the program, but the yields were inadequate for a PEM program. Subsequently, the program was modified to use low noise, GaAs Gunn diodes which were built with high yields for this program. A Ku-band local oscillator was then designed, fabricated, tested, and finally, manufactured during the pilot run phase of the program. The program was eventually modified to include a second local oscillator, for X-band operation. Both types of oscillators were environmentally tested according to the MIL-Specs, and were found to meet all of the final specifications. Pilot production procedures and specifications were generated for both types of units. A quality control procedure was also established for these components. Author
