The second stage of a two-stage experiment was conducted at the National Aviation Facilities Experimental Center NAFEC to determine if a pilot ground trainer PGT could be used to flight check instrument-pilot applicants on instrument approaches in lieu of performaing these tasks in an aircraft on their initial instrument flight check. Based on the comparative PGT and aircraft performance scores of a control and experimental group, the results of Stage II indicate that an appropriately equipped PGT may be used to flight check instrument-pilot applicants on the automatic direction finder ADF very high frequency omnidirectional radio range VOR, and instrument landing system ILS approaches. The report lists the equipment and capabilities required for the ground trainer to be effective as a part-task flight-checking device for accomplishing these tasks.
