A monolithic silicon convolver has been constructed incorporating a SAW waveguide which provides a 20 dB improvement in efficiency over convolvers without waveguides. The waveguide is formed by an etched pattern in a deposited zinc oxide film which forms the piezoelectric medium in the device. A technical report has been prepared on a new method of designing coupled resonator networks for wide band SAW devices, jointly with another contract. This approach has yielded 20 bandwidths for convolvers using zinc oxide on silicon. The last report described experiments establishing the principle of a new analogdigital converter using a SAW delay line. The first model operation with 4-bit word accuracy. The authors have made a computer analysis of the SAW delay line requirements for increasing to 8-bit conversion capacity, which correlates with results obtained on the earlier system, and are using this to design a new SAW delay line for an 8-bit system. Digital comparator and counting circuitry for the system has been designed, using an approach which should render the accuracy of the complete system independent of temperature variations.
