Hydraulic actuators used to control the fins of tactical missiles are typically fabricated from aluminum and steel alloys in a manner that requires external machining operations. These machining operations normally account for a large portion of the costs of such actuators. To reduce costs, Martin Marietta Aerospace investigated the feasibility of making such an actuator out of molded plastic material by designing, fabricating and testing three complete hydraulic actuators for the Air Force Flight Dynamics Laboratory.
